ACLU to Taxicab Board: Stop Circulating Discriminatory Policy

The ACLU of Nevada sent a letter to the board of the Nevada Taxicab Authority today, urging that they take immediate steps to stop the circulation of an old policy that classfies homosexual individuals in the same "high-risk" group for communicable disease as intravenous-drug users and prostitutes.

The policy, according to media reports, was amended in 2007, but not changed in the materials circulated among employees under the supervision of the Taxicab Authority, a state governmental agency. According to the ACLU, this situation is unacceptable must be fixed immediately.

Trampling the Constitution Won’t Solve Nevada’s Budget Crisis

Tucked into Governor Gibbons’ proposals to solve the budget crisis are thinly-veiled attacks on the Constitution and Nevada’s libertarian ethos. Some measures are illusory: they won’t actually solve Nevada’s financial woes because they shift the financial burden from one part of the criminal justice system to an increase in liability. Others measures undermine individual rights and civil liberties.

ACLU-NV Op-Ed: A surveillance state is not a budget solution

Gov. Jim Gibbons recently announced that he is reconsidering a plan -- already rejected by the 2009 Legislature -- to install a surveillance net of cameras throughout Nevada's roadways to catch "insurance scofflaws." The plan's efficacy is questionable at best. All we know for sure is that it would be a big step forward to making Nevada a surveillance state.

In a legal challenge seeking to block the “Personhood Nevada” petition, an initiative that could potentially ban a range of reproductive health care in the state, Judge Russell of the First Judicial District today declared the initiative invalid.

ACLU of Nevada Hosts Notre Dame Law School Students

On January 4, 2010, the ACLU of Nevada started the new year by hosting five students from Notre Dame School of Law for a day. The students were visiting Las Vegas as part of the GALILEE program (Group Alternative Live-In Legal Education). GALILEE enables students to visit different legal organizations, especially those geared towards the assistance of the urban poor and under-served populations, to learn how they can use their legal expertise to assist with the difficult legal problems in the future. It also allows the students to see and experience the issues that they would otherwise not be able to in a normal classroom setting.
