Officer-Involved Shootings: Community Groups Come Together for Transparency and Accountability

A Joint Press Release from the ACLU of Nevada and other community groups:

The two recent officer involved shootings of Trevon Cole and Erik Scott have motivated local community groups, victims families, and citizen’s to come together to address the coroner’s inquest process. The groups are seeking reform to the process that has come under fire in the past, most recently in 2007.

Burning Man has invited the ACLU of Nevada back to Black Rock City to act as legal observers. We are again teaming up with Lawyers for Burners to protect the rights of the citizens of Black Rock City and distribute “Know Your Rights” cards with information on constitutional rights and what individuals should do if they are stopped, questioned, or searched by the police.

United States District Court Blocks Portions of Arizona’s Immigration Law

On June 28, 2010, a federal judge in Arizona issued an order blocking portions of Arizona's new immigration law from going into effect the next day. The preliminary injunction temporarily prohibits enforcement of certain sections that the court found were likely preempted by federal law, and were the most troubling provisions of the law. Alarma causada por el poder de la FBI para trazar y delinear en mapas las comunidades Americanas

La Unión Americana de Libertades Civiles (ACLU, por sus siglas en inglés) hoy le esta pidiendo a la FBI que entregue los datos relacionados con la colección y uso de información sobre la raza y origen étnico en comunidades locales. De acuerdo con el guía de operaciones de la oficina federal de investigaciones (FBI o Federal Bureau of Investigations) del 2008, agentes de la FBI tienen la autoridad para coleccionar información y trazar en mapa los tal llamados “negocios étnicos,” comportamiento, y características de vida y tradiciones culturales en comunidades con concentración de población étnica. Aunque el uso de datos sobre raza y origen étnico puede ayudar en disminuir la discriminación, los atentos por la FBI para coleccionar y trazar datos sobre raza puede ser una invitación para la discriminación por perfil racial. Alarm Raised over the FBI’s Power to Track and Map American Communities

The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada today asked the FBI’s Las Vegas Field Office to turn over records related to the agency’s collection and use of race and ethnicity data in local communities. According to a 2008 FBI operations guide, FBI agents have the authority to collect information about and map so-called “ethnic-oriented” businesses, behaviors, lifestyle characteristics and cultural traditions in communities with concentrated ethnic populations.

ACLU Agrees To Settle Lawsuit Charging Inadequate Medical Care At Ely State Prison

The American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of Nevada late yesterday filed in federal court a proposed agreement between a class of over 1,000 prisoners at Ely State Prison and top state prison and governmental officials that would settle a 2008 lawsuit charging that a pervasive pattern of grossly inadequate medical care at the prison created a substantial risk of serious medical harm for every prisoner in the facility.

The ACLU of Nevada applauds Assemblyman Chad Christensen’s decision to withdraw the “Nevada Immigration Verification” initiative petition. The initiative petition failed to meet the threshold requirements for a ballot initiative and failed to notify voters of its expansive effects, which stretched far beyond immigration and did far more than Arizona’s controversial immigration law.

-Nevada Challenge Update

The proposed Nevada ballot initiative that would bring portions of the contentious Arizona S.B. 1070 immigration law to Nevada may be on its last legs.

Jones Vargas, a Las Vegas law firm has filed a complaint with the Nevada secretary of state on Tuesday alleging that the initiative’s ballot advocacy group (BAG) has not provided a valid address for its resident agent, a violation of Nevada law.
