UPDATE: Taxicab Authority Employees to Receive Diversity Training

On March 4, 2010, the ACLU of Nevada sent a letter to the board of the Nevada Taxicab Authority urging that they take immediate steps to stop the circulation of an old policy that classifies homosexual individuals in the same "high-risk" group for communicable disease as intravenous-drug users and prostitutes.

Alert: ACLU-NV to Argue in NV Supreme Court Against Personhood Initiative

On April 6, 2010, women's rights and health advocates, including the ACLU of Nevada, will ask the Nevada Supreme Court to uphold a lower court ruling that prevents the "Personhood Nevada" petition, an initiative that seeks to ban a range of reproductive health services in the state, from being placed on the ballot. Lee Rowland, an attorney for the ACLU of Nevada, will be arguing before the court.

On January 8, Judge Russell of the First Judicial District declared the initiative invalid, finding that the petition was vague and misleading.

Final Victory in Effort to Make Education Task Force Open to the Public

The Governor’s Education Reform Blue Ribbon Task Force has decided to fully comply with the Open Meeting Law (OML). Dan Klaich, one of the Task Force co-chairs, said that the Task Force would follow the OML, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Will NDOT’s New Proposal Invade Your Privacy?

The Government Could Track Your Every Move.
The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is studying ways to replace the fuel tax with a Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) program in order to charge drivers for the number of miles they travel rather than the fuel they consume. NDOT will be holding public information meetings to present their proposals and get feedback from the public (see below for more information).

The Fight Against REAL ID in Nevada Continues

After the 2009 Legislature, the ACLU of Nevada thought that REAL ID was dead - at least until the next legislative session. We were therefore surprised when Governor Gibbons decided in December of 2009 to unilaterally enact "emergency" regulations that would allow the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) of Nevada to begin issuing REAL ID-compliant identification cards.

ACLU asks that Public and Media Have Full Access to Deliberations of the Education Task Force

The ACLU of Nevada has called on Governor Gibbons to ensure that meetings of the Governor’s Education Reform Blue Ribbon Task Force are open to the public and members of the press. The ACLU fights for principles of open government, and works to ensure that citizens are able to monitor the operation of government and the deliberations of government officials.

Trampling the Constitution Won’t Solve Nevada’s Budget Crisis

Tucked into Governor Gibbons’ proposals to solve the budget crisis are thinly-veiled attacks on the Constitution and Nevada’s libertarian ethos. Some measures are illusory: they won’t actually solve Nevada’s financial woes because they shift the financial burden from one part of the criminal justice system to an increase in liability. Others measures undermine individual rights and civil liberties.

ACLU-NV Op-Ed: A surveillance state is not a budget solution

Gov. Jim Gibbons recently announced that he is reconsidering a plan -- already rejected by the 2009 Legislature -- to install a surveillance net of cameras throughout Nevada's roadways to catch "insurance scofflaws." The plan's efficacy is questionable at best. All we know for sure is that it would be a big step forward to making Nevada a surveillance state.
