Why Nevada?
Our new Executive Director will not only lead one of the state’s most prestigious nonprofit organizations; he or she will also become a part of the cultural and civic landscape of a place unlike any other: Nevada.
People from other parts of the country might have a difficult time envisioning life here beyond the Las Vegas Strip and empty deserts. Take it from us, though—this is a complex, surprising, and ever-exciting place to live and work, especially at the ACLU.
Imagine working on legal observing with the organizers of Burning Man, a famous experimental art festival in the Black Rock Desert. Imagine advocating for an Elvis impersonator’s right to perform for tourists on the Strip. Imagine consulting with criminal justice reform groups, gun rights activists, and LGBT community advocates all in one day. Nevada is a patchwork quilt of diverse communities, histories, and ideologies, and the ACLU travels among them regularly, always guided by the constitutional principles at the core of our mission.
As the location of our headquarters and as the Executive Director’s home base, Las Vegas offers all of the services, entertainment, and activities of other internationally famous cities at a significantly lower cost. The recent recession has made real estate opportunities affordable and the cost of living is well below other major west-coast cities. Not a “Vegas” kind of person? Think again. There’s a lot more here than casinos and nightclubs. We’re building a $500 million performing arts center downtown, right next to a Frank Gehry-designed brain research center. We have a monthly First Friday art festival, an incredible array of dining options, hiking and other outdoor pursuits, and even a few historic neighborhoods. Best of all, Las Vegas is in its adolescence as a city—those of us who live here now and care about community development have a real opportunity to impact this place and its culture.
As someone interested in a nonprofit leadership career, you should know that Nevada is a place where you can make a difference. In the role of ACLU Executive Director, you will be considered an important part of the public debate on a wide array of issues, and you will quickly get to know all of the key stakeholders in our community. Nevada may have been one of the fastest growing states in recent years, but our network of activists, politicians, and other leaders still operate on a first-name basis; pretty soon, they’ll know your name, too.
In a region with a dearth of nonprofit advocacy groups, the ACLU is one of the leading voices for fairness and equality. Our Executive Director will be the person who, more than anyone, shares our values with communities across the state and shapes the public perception of our work. We’ve come a long way already, and perhaps with your help the organization—and the place we call home—will grow bigger and better yet.
Are you up for the adventure? If so, Nevada is ready for you.
